A randomized controlled trial of an app-delivered mindfulness program among university employees: effects on stress and work-related outcomes

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the impact on stress and work-related outcomes an app-delivered mindfulness-based program (MBP; Headspace®) offered employees in a UK higher education (HE) institution. Design/methodology/approach Using randomized waitlist control trial design, participants were randomly allocated be (MBP) immediately for 2 months or after waiting list period (WLC). Data analyzed using Intention Treat (ITT; MBP n = 62; WLC 63); with supplementary analysis restricting those who completed all measures; (MBP 45; 56) then further group at least foundation level 1 app; 31; 56). Findings ITT showed significant increases several aspects mindfulness reduction perceived but no effects outcomes. Analysis restricted app course similar pattern addition work-life balance emotional aspect job engagement. Practical implications offer Headspace® HE sector may result reduced stress. If improvements are also seen, users need encouraged complete minimum practice. Originality/value Effect size estimates contribute evolving picture MBPs workplace.
